Natural Indigo Face Masks

posted in: Design story | 0

Face masks are becoming a required accessory.  For those who love denim, jeans and indigo, Jugu is making face masks using Bluehanded’s natural indigo cotton. The masks are doubled layered with indigo on both sides. There is a gap so a filter can be inserted.  The masks fit comfortably and securely to the face.

Face masks are becoming a required accessory now as lock down ends and we return to work and a normal life amongst others. As the virus can spread without signs of symptoms it is safer to cover our mouths and noses at all times when in public. Certified masks should be worn when the risk of spreading the virus is high but for general daily use, these indigo cotton face masks can be used.

The beautiful indigo cotton and patterns complement a variety of fashion styles. The classic blue and white motifs can be traditional for a classic summer look or can go perfectly with a more casual denim style. If you are into selvedge jeans than these indigo face masks are a must.

Artisanal hand indigo dyed, ‘Lan Yin Hua Bu’

100% natural densely woven cotton ( Weight 225GSM Weave 12s/14s ) with frayed edges and knotted ends for a raw natural look.  Our natural calico cotton is thick yet soft and comfortable and good for skin contact over long periods. Traditionally 100% natural indigo has a natural anti bacterial quality in Asia.  We cannot guarantee that our scarves can have this continued antibacterial effect but natural plant dyes are better against the skin and to breath through then synthetic dyes. Google search on antibacterial effects of natural indigo.

Hand-made, plant-dyed natural calico cotton with pattern created through an ancient method, by a traditional and recognised Indigo Master and his family, that uses hand cut katazome paper patterns with a resist soy bean and natural rock lime paste technique.

Please see our on line and instagram videos for how it’s made. Because of these natural processes, and ethical practices this product is a sustainable fashion item.

Fabric History:

The history of Lan Yin hua bu fabric, is long enough to be traced back to Song dynasty (year 960–1279) when it was known as “Yaoban fabric” or “Medicine speckles”(See note 1) . In the Ming and Qing dynasty (year 1368-1912), it was called “Jiaohua fabric” or ‘watering the flowers’. As it is an indigo dye, the fabric has a rich blue and white colour with a steady luster, known as “Lan Yinhua fabric”.

Why is the blue of Lan Yinhua fabric so pure? – Because of its bluegrass vegetable dyes. According to historical records from “Journey of Qing Emperor Guangxu in Tongzhou city”, the process of producing dyes was first to harvest and then immerse the bluegrass in stone vats for couple of days, afterwards the rotten leaves take out before adding the lime into the vats which is the precipitate. The final earthy dye is known as “Tu Dian” (dried indigo). In Chinese medicine, the leaves of bluegrass named “big green leaves” have a high medicinal value.
