What we do – hand-crafted textiles

BlueHanded create exclusively designed, fabric patterns made by artisans employing katazome (lan yin hua bu)techniques passed down through generations, over many centuries.

Using the ancient resist printing method, we work in exclusive collaboration with our indigo Masters to develop each collection. Working with London-based artists, specially selected for their artistic endeavour and signature style, our fabrics uniquely reinterpret and revere the age-old art of indigo.

These natural cotton textiles are ideal for fashion designers looking for ethical and sustainable hand crafted fabrics for their collections. The cotton is soft to the touch.  The indigo of very high quality and durable that does not run and fades slowly over time, developing its own character like denim.  A perfect complement for jeans wear.  Ideal for light jackets, trousers, shorts, dresses, accessories such as scarves and heavier weight shirting.

For home collection and interior design, create a striking scheme by combining fabrics, or savour individual prints as feature accents; for window treatments, home furnishings, upholstery and accessories. Whatever your choice, BlueHanded is a timeless collection to enjoy today and treasure for tomorrow.

Sex by Alex McKenzie

Sex is a collection of individual prints following in the tradition of textiles as a medium to tell stories

about human relationships, life’s fortunes and rituals through symbolism. ‘Birds and Bees’

explore themes relating to encounters between lovers and the interplay between

the positive and negative that makes connections with those we love both joyful and challenging.

The Birds and Bees combines imagery of swallows and honey bees artfully skirting around central

spines of brambles and apple branches bearing fruit. These visual references are emblematic of the

art of relationships and the careful negotiation required to maintain the equilibrium of both the

physical and emotional side of shared lives.

Twelve by Alister Shapley

Twelve is a grid-based pattern inspired by the element of water. In a truly east meets west design.

Alister draws a parallel between the the indigo-infused water dripping down from the dyed cloth back

into the vat as it emerges during production, and the droplets of rain falling to disturb the surface of

puddles in the streets of London. Both provide a contemplative rhythm to a way of life. For the indigo

Master in China engaging with their artisan craft and for Alister, the print-artist going about his daily

business in London.
